J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter Essay -- Rowling Harry Potter Essays
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Harry Potter is an orphaned boy whose parents were attacked and killed by the evil wizard, Lord Voldemort. The boy survived the horrible slaying, which left him with a lightning bolt scar on his forehead. He lives with his disagreeable uncle and aunt and unpleasantly selfish cousin during summer months. The boy attends the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he learns about potions, flying on a broomstick, and fighting off the evil Lord Voldemort. Harry Potter is adored by children of all ages, along with adults, for his witty humor and fantasy adventures. Children crave his friendship and magic powers. The first three books were on the New York Times bestseller lists before New York Times decided to split up the list into children's and adults' books because of Harry Potter's popularity (Gray par. 2). Harry Potter won the Parenting Book of the Year Award in 1998, and the 1997 National Book Award (Ballard par. 6). Harry Potter has swept through the world causing controversy over the positive and negative impacts the books are having on children. Although some people claim that Harry Potter is Satanic, Harry Potter has had a positive influence on children's literature because children are learning good values, a positive role model, and are reading more. J.K. Rowling presented Harry Potter to children's literature in 1997. Seven years ago, Rowling was an unemployed single mother of a small daughter and was living in a two-room apartment in Edinburgh, Scotland. Rowling began to write Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in a coffee shop while her daughter took naps Since then, she has written a total of four novels: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone written in... ...oshen College Good Library. 24 October 2001. Abortion should be illegal :: essays research papers
Abortion should be Illegal The words of an unborn baby are ones that almost no one ever thinks of, or hears. One of this country's most controversial topics is abortion. However, if one sees the constitutional infringement to women by the restriction of abortion; the torment to the unwanted child; and the anguish society has to sustain, then this topic would not be so debatable. Too many people do not see the effect that abortions cause. It is a very dangerous offence that affects the mother, father, the community, and most importantly, the fetus, and that is why abortion should be illegal in Canada. First, abortion is against Godââ¬â¢s law in many Holy books such as the Bible and the Quran. Secondly, abortion does not only affect the individual, but the community as a whole, and the rights of those people are infringed on. However, abortion does nothing in the cases of rape, or womenââ¬â¢s rights, which is the constant argument people in favour of abortion argue. And lastly, abortion should be seen for what it is, murder. What gives us the right to decide who should live and who should die? That is God's decision. The fetus, the innocent human life whose only protection in the world is its mother's womb can no longer feel protected because even its very own mother could have it murdered. Yet that baby did nothing to deserve to have its life snatched away so suddenly. How can a tiny baby who can feel, breathe, and move be condemned to die without ever saying or doing anything wrong? In our constitution, we are all given the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Why is it that a baby is not given these rights as well?

The Immigrants of America Essay -- Immigration
The culture of every ethnic group is beautiful in its own way and worth cherishing. Today, America is known as the great melting pot not for the number of immigrants it has but rather because of the wonderful cultures and traditions the immigrants brought with them. Immigrants do not need to forgo their mother tongue, significant celebrations or customs to become American. However to be socially accepted, they will need to learn English, take part in celebrating national holidays and fulfill their patriotic duties Americans like every other U.S citizens. It is important for immigrants to learn to speak and write in English while keeping their native tongue. Without knowing how to speak the common language here, it is impossible to blend in. I have seen Vietnamese people who migrated to the United States more than ten years ago but still speak little to no English. Most of them live in their little Vietnamese communities, subsisting off either minimal pay-checks from manual labor, such as giving manicures, or their relativesââ¬â¢ paychecks. They are like parasites that could literally die without their host. Foremost, they will put themselves in danger because they cannot read warning signs and prohibitions. If emergencies arise, these non-English speakers would not be able to explain the situation to a police officer. In the worse case, they will endanger othersââ¬â¢ lives as well. These probably have their own reasons for not learning English but denial to learn when they have the potential is simply illogical when this would open so many doors, opportunities and win them the acceptance of the general population. Even Japanese people learn to speak English once they migrate to America although it is the taboo language in Japan. Immigra... ...nd Videos - For Dummies. Web. 07 Dec. 2010. . Yamaguchi, Kristi. High School and William R. Dy Essay
Born in a beautiful place in Isabela on July 25, 1994, it was my beginning of my journey through life. I was the oldest son of Engineer William R. Dy and Eleanor I. Dy. William, a hardworking man, raised his four children in a much disciplined way. It was from here that Iââ¬â¢ve learned much of his punctuality. When I was small, like every child I had a dream, well more like many dreams. Like every little boy I either fantasized about becoming something like a king or a super hero. As I grew up, I began to realize that life isnââ¬â¢t a fantasy and that I have to answer my true calling and eventually led to discovering my real passion. Like any kid going to school, they have to learn, but to me it was something that made me explore all the techniques how to study and the way others use so many methods of studying. As I prepared myself going to school my first school was in Saint Ferdinand College walking distance in our house. I study there for how many years from kindergarten until I graduated Elementary. My kindergarten experience was so sad because in kindergarten, I was separated from our parents for the first time and I am so nervous at that time, first thing that comes in my mind was, there are a few things that I should be introduced to. First, I should know the name of the kindergarten teacher, the principalââ¬â¢s name, and if possible, where my kindergarten room is. I became overwhelmed at first because of the new situation and the new people. And also I may not immediately like school, but with encouragement, I adapt and hopefully begin to enjoy their very first year of school. Making friends in that very first year in the kindergarten is a very important issue associated with transition to school. Then the time will come I was in Elementary, it seems everything gets bigger. The classrooms, the garden even the green space where students play ââ¬â are all noticeably larger. The children themselves have grown and acquired a greater need to interact in groups, so their furniture and materials have been appropriately designed and sized as well. Mr. Maximo was my favourite teacher made learning fun. I also remember his reading voice and he always accepting my ââ¬Å"creativenessâ⬠. I can remember other elementary teachers scolding me for my ideas. But still I enjoyed my elementary experience but sad to say I will leave my elementary life and start my high school life I will miss my other classmate who will transfer to other school especially if you only spend with them for only a year. But we will never know maybe there will be more excitement, more challenge, and meet new friends. When I began high school in Isabela National High School, I became more afraid because I knew I was entering in to a new world that will shape me to become the person I want to be as an adult. I knew that I was going to have many challenges in school, but I felt that being in my class, I never felt like I would fail. My class helped me and challenged me to decide what I truly felt was my calling. As I progressed in school, I became more in tuned with my writing and other stuffs that made me feel even more positive and gave me even the more confidence to continue. When the graduation day came, I was so sad because I will miss those happy days, emotional days and especially those bonding days with my friends and teachers. For me high school life was the best, Iââ¬â¢ve learned many crazy things in life. Unfortunately, my ââ¬Å"maturityâ⬠did not arrive when expected. I never fully realized in the earlier grades how important high school success is. To go from being coddled and having everything sugar coated, to the treachery of ââ¬Å"real lifeâ⬠certainly affected me, and my entire outlook on life. But still it was the best experience in my life. And now here I am taking up Nursing as my profession, College is a lot different than high school. You may decide to commute from your home to a local campus. It was like kindergarten I was separated to my parents for the second time. But these are supposed to be some of the best years I have so I will make it that way instead of allowing the stresses of college ruin my experience. The trials and tribulations, success and failures, are all part of what will make me as a responsible, mature, & educated young adults. The experiences I gain from these years will stick with my life and make them worth remembering. And by the way my name is Wilson Elibert I. Dy. Signing off.

Many people believe that digital libraries are the future. on that point are as well as those that still hold on to the belief that the tralatitious brick and mortar building is the musical mode a library is supposed to be and that moving to the digital real is non the direction a library should be heading.History The culture revolution is superstar of the marvels of the 20th century. We are at a time animate in an reading society where roughly every matchless around us has a computer, a smartphone, and is connected to the Internet. As our society has compel more and more connected, libraries pull in as well as started to become more digitized. Library mechanization came into popularity in the early 1950s. It started with punched card applications to library technical services operations. In 1965, Licklider coined the contrive library of the future to refer to his resourcefulness of a fully computer-based library and and so in 1978, F.W. Lancaster wrote of the paper little library (Harter, 1996).Other price later on that were used to recognize the library of the future were electronic library, practical(prenominal) library, library without walls, and bionic library (Harter, 1996). The margin digital library came to be from the digital Libraries Initiative. In 1994, six universities in the joined States were granted 24 million dollars for digital library research. This was brought on by the sharp boom of the Internet.Digital library is the call up that was most widely adopted by ac ademics, researchers, and bibliothecs and is used to describe the touch of digitizing selective information resources. Digitization According to Ram Nath Maurya, in that respect is a stress for three things in the digital world (Maurya, 2011) Awareness of information which gives the breath of vision. Awareness of technology which gives the exponent to make the visions manifest. Awareness of needs bid the insight to use professional skills and talents to greater effect. The meaning of this is that it is important for the user to bedevil information that is soft locatable and easily accessible. Nowadays, library patrons have become information certified and no longer essential to handgrip and go to the library to go steady what they need. They want to access it access the information electronically. The process of digitizing implies the production of a digital adoptive for a physical object (Unsworth, 2004). in that respect are legion(predicate) different items in libr aries that are digitized. This ranges from serials that apprise be establish either in print or online to rare books and archives that are now organism preserved in a digital format. There are galore(postnominal) positive outcomes that come from digitizing parts of a librarys collection. There is slight live in reshelving the item. The item is simultaneously available to multiple users. The item does non have to be replaced, since it is not being used and there is no calamity of it being lost. Also, if it is a rare item, it can be preserved more easily as it will be less frequently handled. Why Go Digital? The most valuable aspect of the digital library is its reduction in cost. There are some(prenominal) fees that are negated much(prenominal) as staff pay, book maintenance, rent, and excess books. This makes the cost of the digital library much less to guard than that of a traditional library. Also, increased reduction in the use of paper has a positive wedge on the envir onment. Environmental scientists all all over the world favor digital libraries to answer reduce paper usage. Libraries that have a digital presence can be r to each oneed all over the world, thus allowing the library to have a far greater audience beyond their local community.Their collection can be pctd and accessed from anywhere. As distance education becomes more popular, it is level off more important for libraries to have an online presence. Students who talent not be able to physically access their work librarys collection can instead find what they need on their website. Many libraries are offering a vary tumescent amount of databases containing full-text journals and also electronic books. The interlibrary give program allows students to order books from their own school and other libraries without leaving their home. The role of the librarian in a digital library is still vastly important. They are infallible to package and repackage information. Librarians set up the proxies and open-URLs. They do electronic publishing, provide reference instruction, and hear patrons how to use electronic resources. Also, there is ceaselessly more information that needs to be digitized. Disadvantages of Digital Libraries There are many threats to the nature of digital libraries. Computer viruses are a danger if libraries are not careful to protect their hardware and software. Also, the lavishly initial cost of infrastructure such as the hardware, software, network, and IT professionals can be a downside and then also the cost to maintain and upgrade when needed. Standardization is another divulge that libraries can face when moving to a digital format. Each library is different and therefore it is extremely likely that each library will have a very different way of digitizing their collection and presenting their information online. Another potential hassle is copyright. Digital libraries have to find a way to properly distribute information without vio lating copyright law.The copyright of the author has to be protected as items are digitized and put into an online collection. Future of Digital Libraries The future burn for libraries is to keep moving toward a digital format. Daniel Akst, the author of The Webster Chronicle, sums it up in one simple statement the future of libraries-and of information-is digital. He states, All the problems associated with digital libraries are clothed up in archiving, and goes on to state, if in 100 years people can still read your article, well have resolved the problem.Computer storage continues to rise up at an exponential rate and the cost keeps going down. It is believed that eventually, given the current progression of technology, a person will be able to virtually access all recorded information. There are many large scale digitisation projects current at places such as Google, the one thousand thousand Book Project, and Internet Archive. The technology fundament scanners and the di gitization techniques also keeps improving. There have been recent advancements in how books are handled and insertion technologies such as optical role recognition.Libraries will continue to become more equipped to digitize their own collections and share them with the world. City Of Joy: A film analysis Essay
What happens when everything youve ever known take inms to be a populate? When everything youve worked so hard for in your life take cargons to stick crashing down on you, who do you turn to? You subscribe to to find yourself, to re-evaluate your priorities. What better center to do that than in The City Of Joy.The movie The City Of Joy is approximately a wealthy American doctor named guck Lowe. After he lost a tolerant on the operating table, goo spontaneously decides to pay America and travel to India in the hope of finding himself. Not long after he arrives in Calcutta, Max is attacked by a group of thugs and left hand without money or a passport. An Indian domain named Hasari comes to Maxs rescue. Hasari had left his farming residential ara to come to the city, only to be overwhelmed by its dirt, crime, and overcrowding. patronage their poverty, Hasari and his family take Max in and bring him to a medical clinic in the City of Joy, one of the poorest slums in the c ity.Max is brought to the clinic run by Joan Bethel, an Irish-American nun. When Joan discovers that Max is a doctor, she pleads with him to join her in running the clinic. Max declines, claiming he is a non-practicing surgeon. After an unplanned baby preservation for a woman whose baby is jeopardized, Max begins to see things in a new light. He signs on to help at the clinic, and his attitude about Indias citizens and its way of life changes drastically. The relationships in this movie are very moving. Hasari runs his rickshaw through a monsoon to t block uper for his daughters dowry, while Max defies the topical anesthetic godfather by staying in India to be with his friends and patients. Joan gives freely of herself to the patients in her clinic, day in and day out. By the end of the movie, the relationships established in this movie are unselfish, bountiful and stable.I really enjoyed discovering all the meaningful relationships be developed throughout the movie. Max and Has ari went through decrepit times in order to develop their perform confidence in each other. Joan went from deeming of Max as a selfish boar, to appreciating him and seeing him as a comrade.Through it all, the relationships made seem infrangible enough that the persons involved would risk life and branch to keep their relationships intact. I think this is where the beauty of the engage lies in its intricate relationships between the characters. passim the course of the film, the audience is exposed to the poor alive conditions in India, the filth, the crime, and the poverty. At first glance, it would seem that India would non be a very suitable place to live, the smiles of the young children playing abou in the street seem to say different. This movie shows both sides of India, the good and the bad. Although the musical accompaniment conditions are poor, the spirits of the Indian people are high. Its amazing to see that even in a city so poor, there is liquid joy to be found . The people of India do not present all the modern conveniences we have in our western society, and yet, they are happier than we are. It really makes us have to stop and appreciate all the things we have, and at the same time, we need to realize that our happiness is not measured by our material possessions. I think there is room for everyone to visit The City Of Joy.
